My dog has dry, itchy skin …..?
My dog (rat terrier / dachshund mix) is dry, itchy skin.He seems to scratch all time.He is a house dog, go out for a little fun and bathroom time, do not have fleas, eating Pedigree dog food, that I add 2000 mg of fish oil twice a day, he bathed every 3 to 4 weeks with oatmeal shampoo.I've tried several shampoos in the past that were moisterizing shampoos.These was purchased at the pet store and not on the chain stores.Nothing seems to have help.He woke us several times over the last few nights scratching and yelping because he was scratching so hard.Jonah (my dog) sleeps in the bedroom with us (in bed) and I do not want to put him in the garage on night.But we have to get some sleep.Does anyone know how to help him.I do not want to just treat symptoms.I want to do something that will help his dry skin.Any help out there? Thanks !!!!! He is 3 years old.
First off you dog has allergies (as a dachshund I own a pro at it). You must have your dog seen at the vet and got a cortisone shot. Doxies are world renowned for seasonal allergies, and over shampooing will not help! By washing 3-4 times a week may dry the skin out, which will make things worse. A doxie naturally produces an oil that they need on their skin. Take your puppy to the vet ask for a cortisone shot for allergies (this will take a while) they can also give you some meds for secondary infections caused by all the open wounds from scratching this usually clears up quickly. Start giving your puppy 1 / 2 a benedryl with meals (only 1 time per day is needed), and switch them to a sensitive skin formula dog food such as Pro Plan for sensitive skin. Keep up the Omega fish oils! Believe me it helps. My lil doxie cost me each year to the same thing!
