What is the best treatment for eczema during pregnancy?
I am 20 weeks pregnant and have suffered from discoid / nummular eczema for the last couple years. Since I have become pregnant, it has become progressively worse. I was using a pretty strong corticosteroid cream before pregnancy, but since it is a category C, I am no longer using it. I would also go to the tanning bed regularly, which helped a lot, but I obviously can not do it anymore either. I'm currently using Aquaphor, that helps a little, but I was wondering if anyone has had luck with other products not harmful to the child. I've seen a cream at a pharmacy called Baby Eczema cream gente Naturals and I was wondering if it is safe to use b / c it's made for infants. It is almost unbearable! I am willing to try anything! Any help is much appreciated!
Most topical steroids are actually considered safe to use during pregnancy. They have not absorbed systemically. (Which is why we use them, rather than taking prednisone pills.) The 'category C' rating is simply a blanket one for all types of steroids from oral to inhaled to-date. (And is also the most common rating for all drugs – they can not give it a more secure rating because they can not do randomized studies of pregnant women. But if you look around, you will find many research articles and medical sides say there is no sign of damage. Ask your doctor, he may wish to prescribe a slightly different type but there should be no reason you can not continue to use medicated creams. (I have eczema also and have never found anything OTC that works.)
